Art Scholarship 2012
Artists Row Announces
2012 Art Scholarship Recipients and
Exhibit Opening July 6th
April 24, 2012 – Augusta, GA
Broad Street Artists Row is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2012 Art Scholarship for graduating high school seniors. Two $1,500 scholarships have been awarded: one to Caroline Kalayjian, a senior at North Augusta High School, and one to Carolyn Calloway, a senior at Augusta Preparatory Day School.
In conjunction with the scholarship award, Gallery on the Row will host an exhibition of both artists’ recent works. The exhibit opens on First Friday, July 6, with a special reception from 5 to 8 p.m.
Lisa Marks, Artists Row Chairman, stated, “This was an exciting year to select our scholarship recipients! The applicants represented 8 schools from across the CSRA with several artists from each. It is without question that overall we received portfolios from the most exceptional artists in the history of our scholarship. It was a tough decision.”
Kalayjian’s portfolio and artist statement demonstrated to the jurors a refined skill for portraiture and figure studies, with an interesting foray into color. In her artists’ statement, she said:
“I like to experiment with subject matter and color, and see how the two feel and how it can create tension and contrast with the subject matter, composition and background.”
Calloway’s submissions concentrated on exploring color in close-up portraiture. The jurors were particularly engaged with her talent in painting realistic facial features, while incorporating an abstract appeal found in modern art.
Calloway’s Fine Arts Instructor, Tara Chokshi, commented, “CC is giving serious thought to her future, especially thinking about getting on the right track for studying art in college. She knows full well that art is a part of her very soul and wants to use her creativity in whatever she ultimately chooses to do in college and beyond.”
Kalayjian plans to continue her arts education at Winthrop University in the fall, while Calloway will attend Gainesville State College.
Artists Row offers an annual art scholarship to encourage students to pursue the arts and support student interest in careers in the arts.
